Surface treatment, texture and tone of a sculpture determine whether I use earthenware or stoneware clay. Originally a painter, I apply generous layers of underglazes, stains, and glazes. I may fire a piece multiple times to achieve a desired effect, or include decals and transfers on the work as it dictates. Rather than impose a preconceived outcome on my creations, I let the spontaneous process of sculpting allow a unique subject to emerge.
